In the Medigap Insurance Which Plan Allows to Get Prescription Drugs at a Discounted Price?

Question by suraj.rajput: In the medigap insurance which plan allows to get prescription drugs at a discounted price?
I just turned 65 and received Medicare A and B coverages for which Social Security deducts $ 103 every month.
Now I am in the middle of choosing a Medigap insurance. Leaning towards the Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey for it. Planning to choose Plan F.
A little confused as to where do I get the prescription coverage. Two of my prescriptions cost a lot.
While you are at it, please recommend a better insurance provider.

Hi Suraj,

Congratulations on your 65th birthday! When you receive Medicare, most people get enrolled to Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.

To answer your question about Medigap (Medicare Supplement), all insurance companies that sell Medigap Plan F must offer the same benefits as outlined in “Medigap policies are standardized” on Medicare.gov. Blue Cross and blue Shield is a good company, but be mindful of other companies that might offer you a better rate.

This means that you will get equal benefits from any company you get a Plan F from. However, each company can charge different Medigap Plan F monthly premiums. Usually premiums are determined by the Zip Code or county you live in. Fortunately, there are online Medicare Supplement companies that compares rates for you from multiple companies, so you can find the lowest price in your area.

About Prescription Drugs – Medicare Supplement plans offer $ 0 benefit to your prescription drugs. You may purchase a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan also called PDPs.

You should speak with a knowledgeable agent about both your Medicare Supplement and Prescription Drug Plan offerings, especially since PDPs benefits vary based on the Rx you use.

Other Medigap companies include (but not limited to): Aflac, Humana, Gerber Life, United of Omaha, American Continental, etc

Good Luck!

(Edit: Hi Flower, you said “Some Medigap have prescription drug coverage …”. To further clarify, Medigap Policies sold after 2006 are no longer allowed to include prescription drugs coverage.)
